How to Make Matcha and Matcha Latte
Matcha is a finely ground powder made from specially grown and processed green tea leaves. Unlike regular green tea, where the leaves are steeped and then discarded, matcha involves consuming the entire leaf, which provides a richer flavour. Originating from Japan, matcha has been a central element of traditional tea ceremonies for centuries and is celebrated for its vibrant green colour, earthy taste, and numerous health benefits. Whether enjoyed in a simple tea, a creamy latte, or as an ingredient in culinary creations, matcha offers a unique and flavourful experience.
See below for our Matcha Latte recipe.
Ingredients:
- 1 tsp matcha powder
- 60ml hot water (about 80°C)
Equipment:
- Matcha whisk or a small electric whisk
- Small sieve
- A small bowl
- A mug
Instructions:
- Start by sifting the matcha powder into a small bowl. This helps remove clumps and ensures a smooth texture.
- Let the water cool to around 80°C. A tip is to decant between cups - each decant removes about 5°C so 4 or 5 swaps will get it down to a good temperature. Matcha can taste very bitter if it’s prepared at a too high temperature.
- Add the hot water to the sifted matcha. Use the matcha whisk to whisk the matcha in a "W" or "M" motion until it’s frothy and well combined. If using a regular whisk, whisk vigorously until no lumps remain and the mixture is smooth and frothy. Pour the matcha in your mug and enjoy it as it is or make it a latte (see below).
Make a Latte
Ingredients:
- 240ml of your choice of milk
- 1-2 tsp sweetener (e.g. sugar, honey, or agave syrup) (optional)
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
Equipment:
- A saucepan or milk frother
Instructions:
- In a saucepan, heat your milk over medium heat until it’s warm but not boiling. If you prefer a frothy latte, use a milk frother to froth the milk until it’s creamy and slightly thickened. If you don’t have a frother, you can also whisk the milk vigorously to create some foam.
- If you like your matcha latte sweetened, add your preferred sweetener and vanilla extract to the milk, stirring well to combine.
- Pour the whisked matcha into your mug, then slowly pour the warm milk over the matcha.
- Your matcha latte is ready to enjoy! You can sprinkle a little extra matcha powder on top for decoration if desired.
Tips:
- For Iced Matcha Latte: Follow the same steps, but use cold milk and add ice to your glass before combining with the matcha.
Enjoy your homemade matcha latte!
